Illustration West is an annual competition and exhibition highlighting the best illustration of the year – both from Los Angeles and around the world. The Society of Illustrators (SILA) is proud to represent established and emerging artists and demonstrate that this era continues to be exciting for illustration. Southern Utah University (SUU) welcomed two students, Andrew Lee and Chloe Tate, from the illustration program, with four of their works accepted into the exhibit.

Chloe Tate, a studio arts major majoring in illustration and a minor in arts administration and art history from St. George, UT, shares, “This is my second year of having pieces chosen for the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles competition. It’s an honor to be chosen and very exciting. Every year there is an incredible list of jurors who are incredible artists. Just knowing that they have seen my work and deemed it worthy of the show is a great encouragement. I didn’t start out as an art student and always felt like I was catching up with my peers, but achieving goals like this motivates me to keep improving and working where I want to be. My works tend to contain mostly people and natural elements with a mystical touch. I am an avid reader and storyteller. I like to include a narrative in the pieces that I create, even if this narrative is never known except to me.

The jurors of this 59and year included Dru Struzan, illustrator of the famous Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Harry Potter posters; Claire Keane, concept artist for Disney’s Frozen; Mike Mignola, the creator of the Hellboy comic; Suzy Hutchinson, artistic director of Mad Magazine; Famous cartoonist Jason Seiler; Image caption CF Payne; Fantasy illustrator Justin Gerard; Kadir Nelson, Caldecott Laureate Artist; and editor of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”—Charles Kochman.

Hala Swearingen, Illustration Professor at SUU, shares, “I am so happy that Chloe and Andrew had their work accepted into the 59th Annual Society of Illustrators Los Angeles Illustration Contest this year! Not only does this validate the quality of their work in the illustration industry, but it also adds a prestigious line to their resume. The exhibition had an absolutely amazing jury this year – and I hope Chloe and Andrew will feel an extra boost of confidence knowing that these amazing people voted for their work!

Andrew and Chloe, amazing students in the illustration program at SUU, continue to amaze Cedar City and the nation by sharing their artwork. Congratulations to these dedicated artists!
