Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reshuffle his cabinet on Wednesday: sources

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reshuffle his cabinet on Wednesday, according to multiple sources familiar with the plan.

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reshuffle his cabinet on Wednesday, according to multiple sources familiar with the plan.

They confirmed to The Canadian Press that the top Liberal bench will undergo a slight makeover to account for a minister who has requested lighter Cabinet duties for personal reasons.

All five sources agreed to speak on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

A senior government source said no one would leave the Cabinet and the reshuffle would involve two ministers to report on a family health issue.

Four sources say the reshuffle will involve Procurement Minister Filomena Tassi.

Tassi represents a riding in Hamilton, Ontario. She was first elected in 2015 and promoted to cabinet in 2018.

She served as Minister for Seniors for just over a year before moving to the Labor portfolio after the 2019 election. She held that position for two years. After the September 2021 election, she became Minister of Public Services and Public Procurement.

This is the first time Trudeau has adjusted his cabinet since last fall. The move comes about three weeks before the House of Commons resumes sitting after its summer break.

There are currently 38 ministers in the cabinet, not counting Trudeau himself.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on August 30, 2023.
